Fugue is an objects-on-field painting with a repeated motif, the curvilinear paisley shape.  We see it in the first and second category of objects and also in the larger shapes of the background as if the picture frame is a window onto a much larger painting containing similar shapes on a grand scale.  I was thinking about what to title this piece when I heard a musician make reference to a fugue, and then realized the connection between the repeated motif in a piece of music and a painting such as this, where the motif has different scales or magnitudes so that there are firsts, seconds and thirds.
