Sally's Bio

Sally Trace art studio
When I was very young, my mother took a correspondence course in art history. From Michelangelo to Dali, those big color plates and books full of prints had an enormous impact on my young mind. I learned that I could draw well and had a strong desire to be an artist.

After moving to Pennsylvania, I studied Fine Art at Bucks County Community College and graduated with honors. While at Bucks, I was influenced by the late art historian Hafez Chehab, by his love for modern art, his enthusiasm for beautiful compositions, harmonious colors, lively brushwork. I was also influenced by the sculptures of Bernie Mangiaracina, and served an apprenticeship in bronze casting with Bernie. My work is still informed by his Brancusi-like, elegant curving sculptural forms.

I took courses and workshops at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, including portraiture, color theory and color field abstraction.

I focused on commissioned portraiture for many years, but my true love was always abstraction. In 2000-2004 I showed my abstracts locally in the Philadelphia and New York areas, including the Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Annual, and the Bowery Gallery in Chelsea. In 2005 I made the decision to show my paintings online only. This provides tremendous artistic freedom and allows me to stay in my studio, which gives me great joy.

My paintings have been featured on book covers and brochures, and played a role in the movie “Universal Signs” in which the leading man is an artist.
Today my inspiration comes from the sheer joy of painting and, as time goes by, is more and more connected to my spirituality.

Movies

Sally's paintings played a role in the feature film Universal Signs, in which the leading man (played by Anthony Natale) is a painter.  She also consulted with Anthony on how to paint and provided props for the art studio scenes.  Frank Davis of Qoro produced wonderful fine art reproductions of my paintings to be used as in-progress paintings in the movie.
